I have 9 years of experience in collaborative research endeavors with universities and research institutions, focusing on trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches. My research portfolio includes partnerships with organizations such as UChicago Urban Labs, University of Chicago Humanities Department, Dove Creek Equine Rescue, and Texas Tech University Health Science Center. Together, we've delved into critical areas such as mental health interventions for postpartum mothers, solutions to community violence and poverty, the application of ecofeminism to contemporary social issues, and improving access to higher education for first-generation college students. My commitment to impactful research extends beyond disciplinary boundaries, offering a holistic perspective to address complex societal challenges.
This study explores the utilization of a music and empowerment-based group to engage and provide therapeutic benefits for homeless adults with severe mental illness in a shelter setting. We introduce a conceptual framework and illustrate its application through case examples, highlighting the group process. Guided by the MUZUZE Hip Hop and empowerment framework, the group facilitated social-emotional learning and empowerment-based positive youth development, fostering individual and community well-being. The findings suggest the potential of Hip Hop as a tool for promoting empowerment and well-being, with implications for future research and practice.
HIP HOP, EMPOWERMENT, AND CLINICAL PRACTICE FOR HOMELESS ADULTS WITH SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS
LINKED OPPRESSION:
CONNECTING ANIMAL &
GENDER ATTITUDES
This study explores the interconnection between gender roles, attitudes toward animals, and justifications for meat consumption among undergraduate students at a public university in Texas. We found that pro-meat-eating justifications were positively associated with sexist attitudes and traditional gender roles, while pro-animal attitudes correlated with gender role transcendent beliefs and were negatively linked to benevolent/hostile sexism. These findings support the concept of 'the linked oppression thesis,' highlighting the connection between gender and animal attitudes.
